If you love pizza, you’ll want to be sure to try Johnny’s on East Lincoln Avenue in Mt. Vernon and Pepe’s on Central Ave. in Yonkers.
At Johnny’s the crust is ultra thin and a little on the burned side, apparently because so many people love it that way. Be sure to bring cash and patience. Charge cards and checks are not accepted, only cash, but it’s definitely worth the trouble, as evidenced by the lines waiting for a table. You can also call in your order ahead and pick it up.
Pepe’s is an entirely different, but equally memorable experience. The original Pepe’s is in New Haven, and the specialty of the house, there as well as on Central Avenue, is White Clam Pizza. Local beers and sodas are also on the menu, as are many pizza varieties and salads.
It isn’t exactly health food, but as one of my daughters says “Pizza includes all three food groups.” Mangia!

It’s Greek to Me!
If you love Greek food, Elia Taverna is worth a visit. Located at 502 New Rochelle Road in the Chester Heights, Bronxville, the menu is huge and from my own experience and that of friends, delectable and reasonably priced. All the standards are there – from hot or cold appetizers like hummus, melitzanosalata (roasted eggplant dip, but quite different from babaganoush) or spanakopita to gyros, souvlaki, pastichio, moussaka, a variety of kebobs, charcoal broiled meats and seafood. Lemon potatoes are a specialty of the house and are scrumptious. Various coffees and desserts complete the menu, which can be found online at www.eliataverna.com.
Have You Been to Rita’s?
Rita’s is a chain whose motto is: “Ice. Custard. Happiness.” The specialty of the house is Italian Ice in numerous flavors, made on site every day. Among the most popular flavors are Peeps and Swedish Fish which taste just like……Peeps and Swedish Fish. The other day a friend and I couldn’t resist S’Mores which tasted just like…..S’Mores. All flavors are fat free, cholesterol free and trans-fat free. There are also two sugar free flavors every day, like Pink Lemonade and Root Beer. If you’re bent on a particular flavor, be sure to call beforehand to make sure it’s on that day’s list. The closest Rita’s is at 600 Tuckahoe Road, on the left before you get to Staples.
